Preventing Jet Lag

Going to see new places is always exciting. Sometimes going to a new place such another state or even someehwere out the country, 9 times out of 10 you may not be in the same time zone as you would be if you were at home. By that, i mean... it may be 10pm at home but in your vacation spot it may be 6pm. Your body may become jet lag due to the fact that it is still use to its original time zone. Jet lag is no fun because it can cause you to lose sleep or just not enjoy your vacation. However, I am here to give you tips on what to do if you do become jet lag but most of all how to prevent getting jet lag.

Jet lag is a sleep disorder for people who travels frequently across different time zones. Jet lag occurs when your body is still on its original time clock but you try to make it adjust to the time zone that you are  in. This can cause daytime fatigue and other complications. Some signs and symptoms of jet lag is:
  • Disturbed sleep — such as insomnia, early waking or excessive sleepiness
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating or functioning at your usual level
  • Stomach problems, constipation or diarrhea
  • A general feeling of not being well
  • Mood changes
The more time zones that you cross the worse your jet lag can get.

Ways you can prevent getting jet lag is to arrive early. Arriving a few days prior will give your body time to adjust to the time zone. You can also get plenty of rest because ig you start off sleepy than your going to make it worse.Try to adjust to the time zone that you are traveling to, if your going east try to sleep one hour earlier.

If you do travel and get jet lag, caffeine helps alot with onset sleepiness. You can also get your body adjusted to light and go for a jog to get that energy flowing through your body. Jet lag usually goes away on its on and does not last more than a few days. However, if you are traveling to a different time zone prepare your body for it so you will be able to enjoy your vacation and have a healthy travel.

Traveling during Flu season

It is that time of the year again where people are sneezing, coughing and germs are just having a good ole' time spreading from one person to another. FLU SEASON. Germs are easily spread during this time of year and many people come down with the flu. While traveling, there are many types of bacteria that your body can be exposed to and can cause you to get sick. But of course that is why I am here to give you information on how to stay healthy while traveling.

According to the CDC,"The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose". The flu is believed to be spread through droplets, whether it is an cough or an sneeze. Many people also get the flu from touching an surface that has the living virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose. Flu season in the Northern hemisphere begins around October and November and can last until as late as May. In the Southern hemisphere flu season is from April-September. During these times the CDC estimates around 200,000 people get the flu a year and approximately 36,000 of those people die.

Some signs and symptoms of the flu are:
  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (very tired)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
*It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
People who are traveling are suggested of getting a flu shot two weeks before traveling since it takes the body two weeks to get immune to the virus. Also, while you are traveling pay attention to local health notices. Other tips are to:
  • Wash your hands often with soap and running water, especially after coughing or sneezing
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and put the used tissue in the trash. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Use alcohol based hand sanitizer
With many people traveling from different places for the holiday season, you want to not only enjoy your vacation but also take all the precautions you can to have an heatly travel.

Going to Florida for Vaycay??Stay Clear of the Zika!

During this past summer vacation i went on a cruise to Puerto Rico and a couple of other places. To get on the cruise i had to port in Florida. Well with it being almost 100 degrees in florida i wore shorts? Two days after being in Florida I noticed I had 2 mosquito on the lower back of my thigh! I was freaking out because I immediately thought i had be infected with the ZIKA!

As some of you may know this past summer there was a really bad case of the Zika virus in the United States. What in the world is a Zika virus? Well let me inform you my friend. The Zika virus is carried by an "Aedes" mosquito! Yes a mosquito. The last that we heard of an mosquito carrying a virus was the west nile case. But back to the subject at hand, one of everyone's favorite vacationing place, Florida, has been invaded by the Zika. But don't freak out, I'm here to tell you about where the zika has been, signs and symptoms of zika, and ways to prevent this virus.

The biggest case of Zika has been in the Miami, Florida area. Miami is a known city, it has plenty of tourist attractions, wonderful food, beautiful beaches. However tourist are not the only ones who wants a piece of the Miami life. According to the CDC "On August 19, CDC also issued guidance for a 1.5-square-mile section of Miami Beach identified to have mosquito-borne spread of Zika; on September 17, this section was expanded to a 4.5-square-mile area.".

Some signs and symptoms of zika are:
Fever
Rash
Joint pain

Conjunctivitis (red eyes)
While some people may have little to no symptoms of Zika, it really effects pregnant women. Zika can cause birth defects to an fetus. That is why travelers are alerted about the Zika virus when they are traveling to areas known to have the Zika. Not only can zika be transmitted from mosquito to person, or mother to fetus it can also be transmitted through sex and blood tranfusion.

How to prevent Zika?
You can use insect repellent. You can wear long sleeved clothing, the covers your arms and legs. Practice safe sex by using condoms. Pretty much just try not get bit by any mosquitoes. SWAT FOR YOUR LIFE!!!
